Albemarle County police have joined a statewide program that makes it easier to track guns involved in crimes.
Virginia's pilot program is an expansion of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' electronic tracing system. The database allows law enforcement across the commonwealth to share records with participating agencies.
Prior to the system, many departments had to rely on a pen-and-paper process.
