Tuesday, a Charlottesville elementary school teacher is behind bars on child pornography charges.

Corey Schock, 43, is charged with two counts of possessing child pornography and one count of using a communications system to solicit child pornography. Police searched Schock's Charlottesville home Monday on a federal warrant.

Tuesday, Schock appeared before a judge and was denied bond in Charlottesville General District Court. Prosecutors said Schock made attempts to contact a minor somewhere outside of the area. The U.S. Attorney's Office says an investigation that started in December in Northern Virginia led to Schock.

The school system says there's no reason to believe any students are involved in the investigation. Schock, who earned a Golden Apple Award in 2010, is now on administrative leave without pay.

“It's a sensitive situation, but within the limits set forth by police, we want to be responsive and straight-forward,” said Beth Cheuk, spokeswoman for Charlottesville City Schools. “This is a difficult situation, but we are all encouraged by the strong response of the whole Venable community.”

School administrators and police spent the day at Venable answering questions and concerns from parents.

Prosecutors say evidence gathered Monday suggests this was not an isolated incident and not something that just started in the past few months. Investigators say the investigation is ongoing.

Schock is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on March 28.

Joint Statement from Charlottesville Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office and The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of VA

On Monday, February 10, 2014, a federal search warrant was executed at the residence of Corey Schock, a teacher at Venable Elementary School in Charlottesville.

At the time of the execution of the search warrant, Mr. Schock was arrested and charged with two counts of possessing child pornography and one count of use of a communications system to solicit child pornography. He is expected to make his initial appearance in General District Court in Charlottesville on Tuesday, February 11, 2014.

This investigation originated in Northern Virginia on December 10, 2013. Mr. Schock was identified as a suspect after evidence was discovered by agents in Northern Virginia on February 5, 2014. Local state and federal authorities were immediately notified and the matter has been the focus of investigation since that time.

All aspects of this matter remain the subject of an ongoing investigation by state and federal authorities. Accordingly, no further information is available at this time.

Anyone with information related to this case is asked to contact Detective Nick Rudman at 434-710-0519.

Statement from Charlottesville City Schools on Schock Investigation

I'm writing with a sad acknowledgment that a Charlottesville City Schools teacher, Mr. Corey Schock, was arrested yesterday on charges related to child pornography. At this time, there is no information that links any Venable students to this investigation. Upon notification, CCS immediately placed Mr. Schock on administrative leave without pay. We are cooperating fully with law enforcement. Mr. Schock’s dates of full-time employment with the division are 1997-2000 and again from 2007-present.

All investigation-related questions should go to Detective Nick Rudman at 434-710-0519; any school-related questions should come to Beth Cheuk at 434-245-2962. Thanks in advance for your understanding about a sensitive story in the life of our community.

Superintendent Dr. Atkins says, “We are saddened by this turn of events, but our first priority will be on our students, teachers, and community. Each day, we are aware of the tremendous responsibility to care for and teach our students. We take that responsibility very seriously.”
