Biology Students, Staff at UVA Celebrate Charles Darwin's Birthday
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va (WVIR) -
Biology students and staff at the University of Virginia celebrated naturalist Charles Darwin's birthday. The department kicked off the event with poster sessions and an open house of nine different labs Monday.
Organizers say they wanted to show how Darwin's ideas influenced contemporary issues such as medicine, agriculture and conservation.
“Part of it is really science outreach and helping people understand and learn about all of the interesting biology that's related to what Darwin has helped us learn,” said Benjamin Blackman, assistant professor at UVA.
Biologist Scott Edwards from Harvard University gave a keynote lecture on the evolution of birds after the open house. This is the second year the biology department has held the celebration.
