3 Arrested, 1 Wanted in Fraudulent Check Case

Virginia State Police Press Release

On February 7, 2014, the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Culpeper Field Office, General Investigation and Drug Enforcement Sections, executed a search warrant on a residence in Rockingham County stemming from a fraudulent check investigation that was initiated on November 21, 2013. The investigation resulted in 43 felony warrants being served on three individuals for Forgery and Uttering of Bad Checks, Obtaining Money by False Pretense and Conspiracy.

The subjects arrested in connection with this case are identified as: Richard Anthony Smoot, age 41 of Harrisonburg (29 Felony Warrants), Juanita Marie Steiner, age 33 of Harrisonburg (11 Felony Warrants), and Heather Marie Steiner, age 30 of Harrisonburg (3 Felony Warrants). All are being held without bond. A fourth subject, Daniel Wayne Smoot, age 43 of Harrisonburg is also being sought in connection with this case and he has 9 felony warrants outstanding on him. The fraud ring was based at the residence located in Rockingham County. The group has been issuing fraudulent checks at several locations throughout the Harrisonburg and Charlottesville areas under several businesses. The fictitious business names used on the fraudulent accounts: Rudolph Trucking LLC, Valley Cleaning both of 2666 Shirley Street Harrisonburg and H.P.R. Company of 1304 East Market Street, Charlottesville. The State Police is asking for assistance from anyone who may have received a check from one of these businesses or has information about this ongoing investigation. Please contact Special Agent H.
