LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) - Randolph College has sold an important piece of its art collection for $25.5 million.
College President Bradley Bateman said Thursday that The National Gallery in London purchased the George Bellows painting, "Men of the Docks." The News & Advance reports that the 1912 oil painting is the first major American artwork acquired by the London gallery.
The sale will benefit the Lynchburg school's endowment, which helps fund scholarships and academics.
National Gallery director Nicholas Penny says the painting will be given a place of honor in the facility. Copyright 2014 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
