Some students at Burley Middle School in Albemarle County are presenting their published work Friday night.
The students take part in a summer program called iConnect where they photograph areas of Charlottesville and Albemarle County, then write poems about them.
The program targets at-risk children whose parents can't afford summer camp. Organizer Gloria Rockhold says it teaches them valuable life skills.
"All of them now understand how to use a camera, for example, so that's a skill set that is important, you know, and writing poetry, I mean, that's a really important skill set that they carry with them wherever they go,” said Rockhold.
The students present their work Friday at 6 p.m. at the Bridge Art Gallery in Charlottesville. Their finished book will also go on sale.
