Charlottesville, Albemarle Schools to Close Early Monday

Posted: Updated:

Charlottesville and Albemarle County schools are preparing for what could be a messy commute home Monday due to the presidential visit to Monticello.

All city and county schools will be closing two hours early due to the anticipated traffic and street closures. President Obama and French President Francois Hollande are set to stop at the historic landmark Monday afternoon.

Albemarle schools spokesman Phil Giaramita says almost 70 percent of their students will be affected by the closures.

“It was just a lot easier to take a step that would be uniform across the division, and one of the considerations is a risk that you may have students on a bus for up to an hour or longer, and it just seemed like a prudent decision to avoid that possibility,” Giaramita said.

Albemarle County police announced potential delays are expected between 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Parents should have received notices with exact closing times for individual schools.
