Charlottesville fire crews shut down part of the road that runs along the University of Virginia Corner for hours Friday to respond to a blaze that broke out below Littlejohn's New York Deli and Michaels Bistro.
Dozens of units were dispatched for a reported structure fire in the building that houses the two restaurants at around 2:18 p.m. They found flames in the basement and heavy smoke throughout the building.
University Avenue was closed for about three hours between Chancellor Street and 14th Street. People evacuated the adjacent building that houses CVS pharmacy. There were no injuries as a result of the fire.
Firefighters deployed lines on scene and spent time checking for extensions inside the wall of the building.
The Charlottesville Fire Marshal’s Office has ruled the cause of this fire as undetermined.
Both Littlejohn's New York Deli and Michaels Bistro will be closed for the next couple of days. Charlottesville Battalion Chief Richard Jones says the building needs to undergo repairs and a reinspection before it can reopen to the public.
