A group at the University of Virginia is giving a helping hand to the Salvation Army.
The Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority chapter at UVA is holding a shoe drive to benefit the Charlottesville community. The drive is a part of the group's celebration of 40 years of service and sisterhood at UVA.
AKA has four boxes around the university where students and community members can donate their gently worn shoes.
"I think it’s just vital that we make sure we definitely contribute to the Charlottesville community because I feel a lot of times UVA students in particular don't really give back to their communities and that's something that we strongly emphasize because it allows us to have a relationship with the community and also the UVA community,” said sorority member Corinthia Evans.
The shoe drive runs until Thursday. Saturday, the group will head to the Salvation Army to help sort and distribute the shoes.
