With Albemarle County Schools facing a $7 million budget deficit, swim and dive teams worried they might be on the chopping block. But at Tuesday night's budget work session, the school board said that, while it may decrease funding to sports altogether, swim and dive teams are not set to be cut.
Concerned swimmers and parents took their concerns online. An online petition on Change.org has more than 1,600 signatures of people wanting to save the swim team. A Facebook page, now with hundreds of members, was also created for the effort.
The teams seem to be safe for now, but the concerns stemmed from the fact that the swim and dive teams were recently added in Albemarle Schools. Cutting the swim team also wouldn't have discriminated against girls or boys, since both participate. It also doesn't produce revenue like some other school sports.
