Deeds' Bill to Extend ECO Time Moves to Full Senate for Vote

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, Va (WVIR) -

One of state Senator Creigh Deeds' signature mental health bills is moving forward in Richmond.

The bill would extend the time limit for emergency custody orders (ECOs) from six to 24 hours, allowing more time to find treatment for people in mental health crises.

The bill raised concerns with law enforcement groups, who worry it could put more time and financial strains on departments charged with transporting people to treatment.

The state Senate Finance Committee approved the measure Tuesday morning. It now heads to the full Senate for a vote.
