Charlottesville Attorneys Write ‘Wills for Heroes’

Posted: Updated:
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va (WVIR) -

Two Charlottesville attorneys are preparing wills for first responders at no charge as part of a national program called "Wills for Heroes."

Melissa Riley and Julie King say it's important to have legal documents in place, especially if you are constantly putting your life on the line. They are excited to give back to the men and women serving the community.

"For me, I'm married to a police officer and I see the sacrifice that he gives every day and I think it's really important to give back to these people because they do an incredible service for our community,” Riley said.

Wills for Heroes Press Release

(January, 2014) Wills for Heroes is a program jointly sponsored in Virginia by the VSB Young Lawyers Conference (YLC) and the VBA Young Lawyers Division (YLD) to provide free Wills, Powers of Attorney and Advance Medical Directives to local emergency personnel and their spouses. Wills for Heroes (http://www.willsforheroes.org/) was developed in response to the events of September 11th and has been successfully implemented around the nation. The Charlottesville Albemarle Bar Association is working with Wills for Heroes to bring the program to this area. The Charlottesville/Albemarle attorney community knows the importance of having proper legal documents in place and wants our first responders to have them drafted for free as they work to protect and serve our community.

First Responders interested in participating in the program will attend an informational meeting in February where they will learn about the process of creating a will and what information they will need to bring with them at signing. In March, they will attend a document signing day, where the Wills, Advance Medical Directives, and Powers of Attorney will be drafted and signed. All of this will be free to the first responders and their spouses.

The attorneys involved in bringing “Wills for Heroes” to the area are doing so as a way to say “thank you” to these important public servants. Julie King, one of the attorneys responsible for bringing this program to the area says, "The Charlottesville/Albemarle legal community is pleased to bring the Wills for Heroes program to our local Fire, Police, and Rescue personnel. These first responders are an invaluable asset to our community and we are honored to give back by providing essential estate planning documents free of charge.”

The Charlottesville Police Foundation (CPF) is helping organize the program and is thrilled to have so many attorneys on board to provide this valuable product to our police, fire, and rescue personnel.
