Fluvanna County HS Freshman Aamir Simms Shines for Flucos
Many ask "what's a Fluco," but Fluvanna County basketball star Aamir Simms is only a Freshman and silencing crowds that ask this age-old question.
Head Coach Munro Rateau said, "I think that he's going to be a division 1 basketball player without any question."
At 6'5'' the freshman phenom only has three years of basketball under his belt.
In fact, he used to be pretty bad. "I was terrible," said Simms. "I didn't really like the sport at first, I was new to the game, I had like no coordination or anything."
Simms made the switch from football to basketball in sixth grade and he hasn't looked back since.
Simms said,"They knew I was that tall and I could move, so they just saw if I could make basketball one of my hobbies, and one of my main sports to play and it worked out."
"The game comes easy for him," said Rateau. "He's an unbelievable shooter as far as technique goes. He's one of our best ball handlers. It just comes easy. His skill level is well above his age level."
As a Freshman, Simms is the top contributor on the Fluco's roster. When he isn't manning the post, he is shooting the three-ball. He is averaging 15 points and 12 rebounds a game and he even leads the team in assists. Simms even got his first high school dunk back in December, when they were taking on Monticello.
Rateau said, "They don't care whether he's a senior or a freshman, if he helps us win that's all they care about."
In addition to bringing home conference championships, Simms wants to leave a lasting mark on the Fluvanna County Basketball program.
"I look at myself to be the next Aamir," said Simms. "I don't want to be named after somebody, I want to make a name for myself."
