Albemarle County Police Press Release:

The Albemarle County Police Department is investigating a fatal crash which occurred on Friday, January 24, 2013.

At 8:29 p.m., officers responded to a four vehicle crash on Monacan Trail, about 800 feet north of Heards Mountain Road, near Covesville. The driver of a 2006 Kia Optima was traveling north in the southbound lane. The Kia Optima hit a 1995 Ford Bronco head-on. The driver of the Kia Optima, Phillip John Walker, 41 years old, was killed in the crash. He was from Covesville. The driver of the Ford Bronco was taken to UVA Medical Center with serious injuries.

After the head-on collision, the Bronco sideswiped a 2011 F150 Ford pickup truck which was traveling in the right lane. As the Bronco was rotating to the right, after hitting the Ford pickup, it was t-boned by a 2007 Chevy Silverado which was traveling behind it. All three vehicles ended up in the median. The driver of the Silverado was taken to UVA Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released. The driver of the Ford pickup truck was not transported to the hospital. All of the drivers had on their seat belts except the driver of the Kia Optima, Phillip Walker.

The crash remains under investigation by the Crash Reconstruction Team. Speed does not appear to be a factor. At this time, it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved. This is the first fatal crash of 2014 in Albemarle County.
