Staunton's first murder trial in years is underway. Steven Glenn Moore, 62, is on trial for first degree murder and a firearm charge.
Prosecutors say Moore shot and killed Van Bell, Jr. during an argument outside Bell's home.
The defense is painting the picture of a heart-broken husband. Attorneys say Moore was distraught when his wife, Sharon, left him and moved in with Bell and that led to the deadly confrontation. The defense is also trying to prove that Bell contributed to the violence that led to his own death.
Sharon, the key witness in the case, testified Thursday. She was the one who called police and pleaded for help when the confrontation between her husband and live-in boyfriend came to a head last year.
The defense also says police did not collect evidence properly and took sides in a domestic dispute.
The trial is expected to last into Friday, but there is a chance it could move into next week.
