CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va (WVIR) -
A University of Virginia alumna made her big debut Saturday night on NBC's “Saturday Night Live.”
All eyes were on Sasheer Zamata who became the show's first black female cast member in more than six years.
Back in Charlottesville, Zamata's supporters at UVA are cheering on the 2008 graduate's first “SNL” performance.
One of her former UVA Drama School professors says watching Zamata on “SNL” was a proud moment.
Theresa Davis says Zamata showed lots of promise on her first episode and she looks forward to seeing her grow on TV.
"She brings a cultural experience, she brings a voice as a woman, as an African-American, as a comedian,” Davis says. “She defies labels so I'm really hoping that ‘SNL’ will nurture her talent and do well by her."
Davis says Zamata's new gig has the entire drama department filled with excitement and of course laughter.
She says when one of the program's graduates succeeds, they all do.
