VA Legislative Black Caucus Makes Plans for 2014

RICHMOND, Va (WVIR) -

African-American lawmakers used the first day of the 2014 General Assembly session to set their agenda for the new year.

Wednesday morning, the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus announced its support for things like job creation, automatic restoration of voting rights to nonviolent felons, and early childhood education initiatives.

The group also put its full support behind the expansion of Medicaid health coverage to as many as 400,000 low-income Virginians.

“Why would we allow our tax dollars to be redirected to those states that had the common sense to support the expansion? That makes no sense to us,” said 2nd District Senator Mamie Locke (D), chair of the caucus.

The fight over Medicaid expansion, which is an option for states under the Affordable Care Act, is expected to be one of the biggest debates during this year's legislative session.
