A University of Virginia professor is taking pride in teaching two funny ladies who've made their way onto NBC's Saturday Night Live. Acting professor Richard Warner looks forward to seeing 2008 UVA graduate Sasheer Zamata join the SNL cast.

Zamata will become the comedy show's first female African-American cast member in six years. Warner says his former student was always creating and working backstage when she wasn't in the spotlight.

Warner also taught SNL alumna Tina Fey during her days at UVA.

“People say - how did that happen? Well, UVA students are witty, and I call them social intellectuals. They are best, at least the ones I've worked with, when they're in a community. That's what Tina was as well as I think Sasheer now,” Warner said.

As a student at UVA, Zamata revived an African-American theater troupe and started an improv group.

She makes her debut on SNL January 18.
