CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va (WVIR) -

The Charlottesville Albemarle Technical Education Center has released how much taxpayer money is being used to create a new strategic plan.

The school initially would not comment on the $60,000 consulting firm contract.

CATEC selected Charlottesville consulting firm the Bridge LTD in late September to help the school revamp its vision for the future.

But documents related to the deal show that the school's board did not choose the cheapest option.

CATEC director Adam Hastings confirms documents obtained by The Schilling Show outline details of the contract with the Bridge LTD.

According to the documents, three other groups responded to the school's request for proposal.

The lowest strategic plan proposal totaled close to $40,000. The highest came out to $66,500.

CATEC Board Chairman Steve Koleszar says the board chose the third highest proposal because of the strength and experience of the firm.

“To get a good job and get a thorough job costs a sizeable amount of money,” Koleszar say. “Weighing cost versus quality – this is the one our staff selected and recommended.”

Hastings stressed the price of each proposal was only one-fourth of the weighted scoring system CATEC used to choose the consultant. The other three factors evaluated were methodology, experience and strength of overall proposal.

Koleszar says the school is pouring reserve money into this investment.

“Two years ago, we eliminated one of our administrative positions at CATEC and that created a reserve that we were able to use for this,” he says.

There will be a public meeting on the strategic plan in CitySpace on January 16.
