CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va (WVIR) - Armed with their favorite stuffed animals, children hit the Rivanna Trail Saturday for the eighth annual Teddy Bear Hike.

The one-mile jaunt is designed to show kids that it's possible to have fun outside, even in bitter cold weather.

“It is an excuse to bring people out and hike on a beautiful winter day,” says Dianna Foster of the Rivanna Trails Foundation.

A guide showed children how urban forests help real animals stay warm in the winter. The kids were given snacks for themselves and bird seed to leave for animals.

The Rivanna Trails Foundation and Blue Ridge Mountain Sports sponsored Saturday's hike.
