VA Lawmakers Revive Eugenics Compensation Bill

Posted: Updated:
LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) - Two Virginia lawmakers are reviving an attempt to compensate people who were sterilized under the discredited pseudoscience of eugenics.

Virginia's aristocracy promoted the forced sterilizations of Virginians it deemed genetically inferior starting in the 1920s. More than 8,000 Virginians were sterilized, some as recently as about 1970.

The News & Advance reports that Prince William County Delegates Bob Marshall and Patrick Hope are sponsoring legislation to award surviving victims $50,000 each. Similar legislation failed last year. Opponents worried about setting a precedent for reparations for practices such as slavery.

Mark Bold, director of the Christian Law Institute, said seven Virginia survivors of eugenics have been identified.
