Governor-elect Terry McAuliffe has chosen a familiar face to serve as the next secretary of education. He nominated former first lady Anne Holton, wife of Tim Kaine, Friday morning in Richmond.
The daughter of former Governor Linwood Holton, she and her family helped integrate Richmond's public schools in 1970.
The longtime youth advocate also has experience as a former juvenile and domestic relations court judge.
“Anne Holton's lifetime of experience with Virginia's public schools, her public service on behalf of Virginia's students, and her passion for creating opportunity for all of our kids makes her the best choice to be the secretary of education,” McAuliffe said.
Holton currently serves as program director for the Great Expectations program for foster youth.
