Virginia Speeds Psychiatric Bed Registry Initiative

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia officials are speeding implementation of an online psychiatric bed registry following an attack on a state lawmaker.

The Virginia Acute Psychiatric and CSB Bed Registry will list psychiatric beds at hospitals and locally run crisis units.

The state hired Virginia Health Information in 2009 to develop and implement the registry. The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that the project has been delayed by budget and staffing cuts, and other events.

Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services assistant commissioner John J. Pezzoli tells the newspaper that the effort to implement the registry has increased since the Nov. 19 attack on Sen. Creigh Deeds.

Deeds was stabbed by his son, who then killed himself. The son had been released from emergency custody because a psychiatric bed couldn't be found for him.
