Albemarle Police: Don’t Display Boxes from Gifts on Curb
ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va (WVIR) -
The hustle and bustle of Christmas is over, and in the midst of enjoying all your new presents, you probably didn't even think twice about throwing your trash on the curb. But Albemarle County police are warning that your trash could make your house a target for thieves.
Be it new TVs, stereos and other big-ticket gifts, Albemarle police spokesperson Carter Johnson says, "You don't want to advertise what's in your home."
Police say you should break down your boxes, hide them in garbage bags or take them to a recycling center, and be strategic about when you take your trash out.
"If you are going to be throwing away the boxes, make sure you put them out the day that the trash is going to be picked up so it's not out for a long time,” Johnson said.
Albemarle police also say it's important not to let people know on social media sites when you will be out of town. It lets people know when your home will be empty and puts you at a greater risk for theft.
