Augusta 9-Year-Old Runs Half-Marathon in Honor of Grandfather

Posted: Updated:

A 9-year-old boy in Augusta County is going the distance in memory of his grandfather. This month he completed a half-marathon and raised more than $1,300 for the American Cancer Society.

When Caleb Maddox lost his grandfather, Nelson Maddox, in November to kidney cancer, he decided to do something.

He had completed 5Ks and 10Ks, but put his mind, this time, to running 13.1 miles. Maddox went out to the community and shared his grandfather's story, and friends and family members pitched in to raise the money.

"I started raising money because my granddad died, and I don't want anybody else to die of cancer,” Caleb said.

His 6-year-old brother Aiden was too young to enter the race, but he made dozens of bracelets and sold them for the cause. After collecting the donations and finishing the trail run in Elkton, he brought the money in to the Relay for Life office.

He's inspired members of the community and his own family.

“I'm very proud. And for Caleb to have completed a half-marathon at 9 years old, I cried tears of joy that day when he completed his run,” said Erica Maddox, Caleb’s mother.

But he hasn't reached the finish line just yet. Caleb wants to keep going and raise $2,000.

The family started a team for Relay for Life called The Running Maddoxs. If you'd like to join the group, make a donation, or learn more, click here, or call the Relay for Life office for Augusta and Charlottesville at 434-978-7423.
