If you've strolled along Charlottesville's downtown mall recently, you may have spotted some sweet signs of holiday cheer. More than 20 businesses featured creations from the Virginia Gingerbread Christmas competition in their front windows.

Normally, the entries are taken home with their designers after the contest. Organizers wanted to try something new this year with a gingerbread trail winding downtown.

"The customers really seem to enjoy it. We got a lot of nice comments and the merchants enjoyed it, and the people who made the gingerbread houses liked it because they could send their friends to see the work they did," said Bob Stroh, Downtown Business Association co-chair.

Organizers say it was a great way for businesses to attract people to their storefronts. They plan to continue the tradition from now on.
