ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va (WVIR) - Hundreds of runners took off Saturday morning in Crozet to help some of our area's bravest families.

The Freedom 5K Race benefits the Folds of Honor Foundation. It provides assistance to the children and spouses of military service men and women who were killed or disabled in combat.

“We are going to award three scholarships on behalf of this community to someone who is deserving and wants to go to college,” says Major Ed Pulido.

The race course wound through Old Trail on an all-terrain course.

Organizers expect to raise about $30,000 which is roughly 10,000 more than last year.
