VDOT Uses New Technology to Make Afton Mountain Safer

Posted: Updated:
ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va (WVIR) - The often foggy commute over Afton Mountain will soon be safer for drivers.

The Virginia Department of Transportation is using new technology to improve the traffic flow and keep drivers in the loop about roadside hazards.

The I-64 corridor has a higher average traffic crash rate because of fog and wind.

The new technology has a message board that will alert drivers of weather conditions, visibility detection sensors to improve the fog-light system and much more.

“This is an example of us using cutting edge technology to help improve safety for drivers to give them information in real time,” says Lou Hatter of VDOT. “[It’s] really key so that before people leave on their commute, they can check 511virginia.org.”

Traffic cameras will allow drivers to check fog and weather conditions on the 511 app.

It lets drivers know what's ahead before they leave home.
