A retired navy admiral with ties to Charlottesville will be Virginia's next secretary of veterans affairs and homeland security.
Governor-elect Terry McAuliffe announced Admiral John Harvey Jr. as his pick Friday morning in Northern Virginia.
The former U.S. fleet forces commander recently retired to Charlottesville after almost four decades in the Navy. McAuliffe says Harvey will be an important voice for more than 800,000 Virginia veterans.
