UVA Student Wins Trip to Space through Contest

Posted: Updated:

A University of Virginia student will soon be getting an out-of-this-world experience.

Earlier this year, Patrick Carney entered an Axe Body Wash competition to win a free trip to space. More than a million people competed for the trip but Carney was one of the few to come out on top.

He just came back from a space camp in Florida earlier this month to prepare for his flight. He says he’s looking forward to seeing earth from a new perspective.

“Looking down on Earth and just seeing how small Earth is compared to the rest of the universe and how thinly protected it is, it really changes your views and that's something I've always looked forward to since I became interested in space,” Carney said.

Carney will head to space in 2015. Right now, tickets for that flight cost about $95,000.
