The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank is getting ready to feed tens of thousands of extra people. Kroger presented the food bank with almost $11,000 in gift cards Thursday at the Kroger store at Rio Hill Shopping Center.

The grocery store chain's donations came entirely from customer contributions at stores in Staunton, Waynesboro, Charlottesville and Harrisonburg.

"The support from Kroger means that we can really bring healthy nutritious food to people who need it," said Michael McKee, CEO of the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.

Nutritious foods like fresh fruits and vegetables are often in short supply compared to canned foods and snacks.

The food bank says the money will provide more than 43,000 meals in central and western Virginia.

Kroger Press Release

Kroger today presented the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank nearly $11,000 to help feed the hungry in western and central Virginia.

The donation came from customers and associates who donated $1 and $5 when they purchased groceries at Kroger stores in the region this year.

"We are grateful for Kroger's year-long support and ability to get the community involved in the ongoing efforts to alleviate hunger," said Michael McKee, CEO of the Blue Ridge Food Bank. "The great partnership that Kroger enjoys with its customers will result in the Food Bank's being able to provide 43,000 nourishing meals for families, children and seniors throughout the region."

"Kroger's associates have joined our loyal customers in setting an example of generous support for the hungry," said Allison McGee, spokesperson for Kroger's Mid-Atlantic region. For the past 30 years, Kroger has worked closely with Feeding America and its network of local food banks, including Blue Ridge, to bring food, funds and hands-on assistance to hunger relief efforts in communities where customers and associates live and work.
