The Hope Community Center in Charlottesville is gearing up for its annual Christmastime giveaway, the Hope Chest event. Bags of donated clothing and household items are stored in the center on 11th Street - but the giveaway is still very low on toy donations.

Volunteers will move everything to Venable Elementary School for the giveaway Saturday morning, when 1,400 people are expected to pass through. That's 300 more than last year.

"So many people are without jobs right now and can't work and need items just to provide for their families. So it's nice to be able to come together as a community and provide those items and show a partnership with everyone," said Tammyjo Smith, Hope Center Executive director.

The giveaway will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. You can drop off donations at the Hope Center on 11th Street NW through Thursday evening.
