Culpeper County Sheriff's Office Press Release
The Culpeper Communications Center received a 911 call this morning reporting a man with a knife at the A.G. Richardson Elementary School. The call was dispatched at 8:40 a.m. and the first Deputy Sheriff was on scene at 8:42 a.m., followed by four additional deputies at 8:44 a.m.
A female victim returned to her vehicle in the parking lot shortly after school began. The suspect was hiding in the back seat of her vehicle. The suspect was wearing a ski mask and displayed a knife when he told her to drive the vehicle away from the school.
The suspect was distracted by a phone ringing and persons nearby in the parking lot. The victim took advantage of the distraction and exited the vehicle. The suspect had removed his mask and the victim was familiar with the suspect as an acquaintance.
The victim ran to the school and entered the administration office just inside the front door. The suspect had chased after the victim but no longer possessed the knife. The school faculty reacted quickly and separated the victim in another room. The staff locked doors and detained the suspect in the office until deputies arrived. The suspect was taken into custody without resistance to law enforcement.
Detectives have recovered more than one knife, “zip ties” and a cloth “gag” from the victim’s car. The suspect had traveled to the school in a vehicle “borrowed” this morning from a friend.
The suspect is familiar to the victim and was suspected of previously stalking the victim. Additional charges were placed in relation to the previous stalking and entry of the victim’s home. The case is ongoing and Detectives are continuing to collect evidence at this time.
There is no reason to believe the suspect had any intent to harm the students or faculty at the school. The school staff reacted quickly, professionally, and even placed themselves in potential danger in order to protect the victim and others.
Culpeper Deputies were on scene within two minutes. I commend the actions of the A.G. Richardson staff.
