Martha Jefferson Doctor Reviews At-Home Sleep Test

Posted: Updated:

A central Virginia sleep doctor is giving mixed reviews for an at-home test designed for people who struggle "catching their Zs."

Chris Winter with Martha Jefferson Hospital's Sleep Medicine Center says more insurance companies are requiring patients use a home test instead of a full sleep study at the center. The home kit is about half the cost.

Winter says the test's six measurements can help diagnose sleep apnea without doing the full study.

"Anytime you feel like the characteristics of a traditional sleep apnea patient are being met already, this is a great way to solidify the diagnosis and move forward with some sort of therapy," said Winter. "We just have to be trusted as practitioners to know when it's appropriate and when it's not."

Winter says the home kit is not a substitute but is a great alternative for patients who are nervous about the overnight stay at the Sleep Medicine Center.
