Culpeper County Deputy Cleared by VSP in Fatal Shooting

Posted: Updated:
CULPEPER, Va. (AP) - An investigation has determined that the fatal shooting of a man by a Culpeper County sheriff's deputy was justified.

The Virginia State Police conducted the investigation of the April 11 incident.

Police say Deputy Patrick Cooper shot 59-year-old Harold Lee Daniels of Rapidan after Daniels pointed a gun at several deputies. The deputies were attempting to arrest Daniels after his vehicle was clocked going more than 100 mph. A deputy conducting the speed checks attempted to stop Daniels and he fled.

Culpeper County Sheriff Scott Jenkins tells The Free Lance-Star  that he was notified of the investigation's findings on Monday.

Cooper returned to work Monday after being on paid administrative leave since the shooting.
