ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va (WVIR) - More than 70 middle school students from across central Virginia spent their Saturday battling it out in a math tournament.

Albemarle High School hosted the inaugural Junior Albemarle-Charlottesville Area Mathematics Competition.

The all-day event featured different activities including math tests, games, and a quiz bowl where students answer questions using a buzzer.

“We really wanted to engage middle schoolers in math-related activities because they do have math opportunities around the area, but typically those competitions only happen once a year so we wanted to offer another opportunity for students to participate in these types of events,” says JACAMAC director Andreas Racichandran.

An award ceremony was held at the end of the day to recognize the top scorers.

The students hope to make this competition an annual event.
