ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - Governor-elect Terry McAuliffe has turned to a one-time rival to fill one of his key cabinet posts.

Brian Moran, who ran against McAuliffe four years ago for the Democrats' gubernatorial nomination, was introduced Friday at the Arlington County Courthouse as McAuliffe's choice to lead the state's Department of Public Safety.

Back in 2009, both Moran and McAuliffe lost the primary election to state Sen. Creigh Deeds.

Moran was a prosecutor in Arlington County for seven years before becoming a state delegate representing Alexandria. Until recently, he served as chairman of the Democratic Party of Virginia. He is currently in private practice.

Both McAuliffe and Moran said that gun violence would be a priority in the next four years. McAuliffe supported some gun-control measures during the campaign.
