Police ID Man Arrested after Stabbing Outside Albemarle Kroger

One man was arrested after police say a fight outside a grocery store sent another to the hospital with a stab wound.

Albemarle police say, around 9:30 Thursday night, two men standing outside the Kroger in the Rio Hill Shopping Center started fighting and one stabbed the other.

The victim was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Lawrence Wayne Egnor was arrested and charged with malicious wounding in connection with the stabbing. Police say he began fighting with a man he knew and stabbed him in the back.

The Rio Hill Shopping Center, which has been the site of several crimes within the past few months - Albemarle police arrested a Charlottesville man after the SunTrust Bank in the same Kroger was robbed in September and several larcenies were reported at the center in November - but even though it's a busy patrol sector, Albemarle police say they don't believe the stabbing is part of a pattern or trend.

"We do have an increased call for service in that area, and so there is increase in criminal activity and calls for service just based on the volume of people in the area. It's in the urban ring, it's a shopping center, there's lots of people, lots of traffic," said Carter Johnson, spokesperson for Albemarle County police.

Egnor already has a rap sheet - he spent some times behind bars for stealing a red kettle from the Salvation Army in 2010. He was one of the organization's bell ringers at the time.

Egnor is currently being held at the Charlottesville-Albemarle Regional Jail without bond.
