Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan says quarterback Robert Griffin III will not play in the teams three remaining games this season.
Kirk Cousins will get the start for Washington at Atlanta Sunday.
RG3 will be the #3 quarterback on the depth chart behind Rex Grossman.
Shanahan says he's benching Griffin for the rest of the season to keep the quarterback healthy for the offseason, pointing out that Griffin has been sacked 24 times in the last five games, and two of the Redskins' final three games are on artificial turf.
"You gotta take a look at the risk and reward and with Robert," says Shanahan. "His hits were piling up on him, taking its toll, and I was afraid that we would set him back, and the only way he'll get set back is if he gets hurt, and I said its not worth it right now."
Griffin says, "I expressed my desire to play. Of course I want to be out there and finish the season with my guys, and see it through. He explained to me his reasoning. At the end of the day coach's decision is what we go with, and that's the way it's always been."
Washington is 3-10 this season, and will have a losing season for the third time in four years under Shanahan.
