Two Alarm Fire in Cville Forces Evacuation in Frigid Weather

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) -
A two alarm fire forced the evacuation of residents from a Charlottesville apartment building.
The fire started around 7:00 Sunday evening in a third-floor apartment in the Tarleton Square complex on East High Street.
Fire investigators believe the fire was caused by a malfunctioning heating and air conditioning unit. They say the flames quickly spread to the attic, but no one was injured.
Sunday's winter weather created its own set of challenges for fire crews.
“We've got to watch the sidewalks now,” says Charlottesville Fire Chief Charles Werner. “They are freezing over so we have to try to try to move and put things in place that we are going to use and try not to fall in the process.”
People who live in the apartment building are getting a hand from the Red Cross.
