The Buckingham County and Riverheads high school football teams both lost in the VHSL 2A state semifinals Saturday.
The Knights fell 27-0 against Brunswick at Armory Stadium in Franklin, and come up one game short of making the state title game for the first time since 2002.
Head coach Craig Gill says, "I've been coaching for 38 years. This has been the most pleasurable group of men to coach. A lot of people counted us out early. I'm so proud of these young men. From where we started in August, 1-2 in September, to where we are now, we told these boys they have a chance to make their mark on Knight football, and the made it. We came up short today, but the effort was there, and that's all I can ask, to give a great effort."
Buckingham finished the season with a record of 10-4.
The Gladiators lost 28-7 at top-seed Giles on the other side of the bracket.
Landon Diehl led Riverheads with 18 carries for 86 yards and a touchdown.
Giles was paced by Brett Whitlow, who ran for 154 yards and two TD's on 15 carries.
The Gladiators finish the season 13-2.
Brunswick and Giles will play for the VHSL 2A state championship next week.
