A Charlottesville High School orchestra teacher is being honored Wednesday by her alma mater for her world-class instruction.

Laura Thomas received the James Madison University Outstanding Music Educator Alumni Award. She's being recognized at Charlottesville High School's winter concert.

In her 32 years at CHS, she grew a program of eight students to 145.

"I was very flattered. I felt like I got a great education at JMU and it landed me the job in Charlottesville that I have loved now for 32 years, so I'm really proud that I went to JMU and it felt really good to be honored by them,” said Thomas.

This past April, her class was named best overall orchestra at a competition in New York.

Thomas' next goal is to take her program to France next summer.
