Luray Caverns Gives $50,000 to Restore Battlefield
Third Battle of Winchester Site
WINCHESTER, Va. (AP) - Luray Caverns Corp. has donated $50,000 to help pay for restoring part of a Civil War battlefield near Winchester.
The Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation plans to restore the 30-acre Middle Field portion of the Third Battle of Winchester site. The project will cost about $500,000.
The Winchester Star reports that Luray Caverns presented its donation to the foundation Tuesday night during a reception at The George Washington Hotel.
Foundation executive director Denman Zirkle says the donation increases the total raised to about $130,000.
About 55,000 Confederate and Union troops fought during the battle on Sept. 19, 1864. There were 8,630 casualties.
The Middle Field project is part of an overall $2.2 million restoration effort to restore the battlefield.
