Riverheads Football Has All Eyes on Giles

Posted: Updated:

Last Friday night when the Riverheads hosted Goochland in the State Quarterfinals, the Gladiators trailed by three (28-31) with under three minutes on the clock.

Riverheads blocked a punt and scored moments later to take the four point lead (35-31).

Riverheads head coach Robert Casto (13-1) said, "We got a couple more breaks than what they got. It came down to a play here and a play there and our kids made the plays when they had to. I don't think Goochland lost, they just ran out of time."

With under 20 seconds left in the game, Chance Staton made an interception to ice their 35-31 win, sending the Gladiators to the state semifinals.

Casto said, "We expect to be here, we work to be here, this isn't some surprise for our kids. This is what we expect year after year and we're just doing what we're supposed to do."

The Riverheads football program already has three state championships under their belt, with their last coming in 2010. While coach says it will be great to win another one, their only focus right now is Giles. Casto said, "Giles a big strong group of kids, they run the single wing out of Southwest Virginia. They've kind of been the big guy down there for a long time...We've got a game this week, and we'll worry about next week if next week happens to come."

Riverheads will travel to Giles on Saturday at 2 PM for the 2A VHSL State Semifinals.
