UVa Soccer's Brian and Doniak Named Hermann Trophy Semifinalists
The UVa women's soccer team is aiming for its first National Championship in school history. The 'Hoos will face UCLA in the College Cup semifinals Friday at 7:30 just outside Raleigh, North Carolina.
Virginia junior midfielder Morgan Brian and her teammate Makenzy Doniak are two of the 15 semi-finalists for the Hermann Trophy. The Hermann Trophy is an honor given annually to the top college player in the nation.
Virginia is the only school with two players on the list for the award.
Brian leads the ACC in scoring with 46 points, 16 goals and a league-high 14 assists. She has a goal in all four of Virginia's NCAA tournament games this season. As of now, Brian is one assist shy of the UVa single-season point record.
Meanwhile, Doniak ranks second in the ACC in scoring right behind Morgan Brian with 44 points. Doniak has 19 goals and 16 assists. She is one goal shy of the UVa single-season record. Doniak leads Virginia with six game winning goals.
Doniak and Brian have been a great one-two punch for Virginia this season.
Brian said, "This year we've been special together, she's assisted on a lot of the goals I've scored on and I think I've assisted her in a lot of ways, so I think we really compliment each other and I think last year we didn't have that type of chemistry. I think this year we've kind of bloomed together and that's what's made this offense go.
"I think everyone knows Morgan is amazing, the thing that stands out to me is she is a leader during practice, during games, off the field," said Doniak. "She leads the team in every way possible and I'm so happy to play with her and like she said, our chemistry has been amazing."
"Both Mac and Mo have had tremendous years," said head coach Steve Swanson. "I think both would say they've needed one another to have their years you know, and they've needed the team."
