Operation Christmas Child Collects More Than 7,000 Donations

Posted: Updated:

Central Virginia coordinators for an international program dedicated to making the holidays brighter for needy children have collected a record number of donations.

Operation Christmas Child has collected more than 7,800 shoebox gifts in the Charlottesville area this year. That total surpasses last year's collection numbers by more than 500 boxes.

The toys will be distributed to kids worldwide.

“I've heard of people who have been there and just seen when children have opened the boxes and seen the excitement in their eyes, and this is the first time many kids have received in their life,” said Gray Hill, area coordinator for Operation Christmas Child.

More than 1,000,000 boxes have been distributed over the past two decades. This year, 500,000 will be sent to the Philippines.
