Annual Christmas Parade Rolls Through Downtown Staunton
Staunton Christmas parade
Monday, thousands will line the streets of downtown Staunton for the traditional Christmas parade. Organizers say the tradition started more than 40 years ago, and visitors are in for a real treat.
The parade is sponsored by the Staunton Downtown Development Association. It runs from the corner of Frederick and Augusta streets through Lewis Street. You can see floats from all different community groups, churches and businesses.
About 2,500 volunteers worked to put the event together and they're expecting thousands more to come out.
"We have dancers and personalities from the community, and it's just a lot of fun. It's a lot of fun to be in it, and it's a lot of fun to watch it, too. We get tons of volunteers from the community that organize their groups to come and join us for the parade,” said Julie Markowitz, executive director of the Staunton Downtown Development Association.
The Kiwanis Club, the Staunton Police Department, public works and many others were involved in arranging the festivities.
Roads will be blocked off from Churchville Avenue to Beverley Street. Event planners recommend coming in through Johnson Street and finding a spot along there or in one of the nearby parking decks. They also recommend getting there as early as possible.
The parade goes from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday night.
