It's official. Republican Mark Obenshain has formally filed a request for a recount in the Virginia attorney general's race.
The petition was filed Wednesday morning in Richmond Circuit Court. A three-judge court will supervise and set the dates and terms of the recount. The recount is expected to start in mid-December.
Democrat Mark Herring's win by a margin of 165 votes is the closest in a statewide race in modern Virginia history.
In a statement, Herring says Obenshain has a right to pursue a recount, but his tactics won't impede his effort to build a team to prepare for the 2014 legislative session. Some analysts say election officials could examine as many as 50,000 ballots during the recount, which will happen in mid-December.To read Obenshain's request in full, click here.
