UVa Women's Soccer Blanks Wake Forest 2-0; Advances to NCAA Quarterfinals
The top-seeded Virginia women's soccer team (23-1) blanked Wake Forest 2-0 in the NCAA round of 16 Saturday at Klockner Stadium.
Makenzy Doniak put the Cavs on the board in the second half when she tapped in a cross from Alexis Shaffer that hit the crossbar.
Doniak said, "We had a lot of chances first half, we just couldn't put it away. To be able to put away that first goal was great. A great cross from Shaf. I think that just start our momentum even more and we were just on fire from there." Shaffer added, "I think in the second half we use the width more, so we got a lot more opportunities and crosses which was what our game plan was. During halftime we talked about where we wanted the ball to be served and the routes to be made so we did that as best possible and then came out in the second half and it worked effectively."
Morgan Brian scored the second goal with a one time strike from 12 yards into bottom left corner of the net.
Head coach Steve Swanson said, "This was not an easy match, but I thought that was one of our best performances of the year, start to finish."
The Cavaliers will head to the NCAA Quarterfinals where they'll face Michigan Friday, November 29 at 7pm at Klöckner. This is the first time they've hosted the Quarters since 1992.
