Charlottesville Woman Wins $1M in Virginia Lottery

Virginia Lottery Press Release

I Ju Liu doesn’t play Powerball very often, but once was all it took when the Charlottesville woman matched the first five numbers in the October 9 Powerball drawing. That was good enough to win $1 million.

“I still don’t believe it!” she later told Virginia Lottery officials.

She bought the winning ticket at Seven Day Junior, 111 Maury Avenue in Charlottesville. The store received a $10,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket.

On November 19, she received her prize at the Virginia Lottery’s Customer Service Center in Harrisonburg.

The winning numbers for that drawing were 3-9-19-33-38, and the Powerball number was 18. The only number that she didn’t match was the Powerball number. Had she matched that final number, she would have won the $108 million jackpot. She selected the numbers on her ticket using numbers suggested by family members.

After the drawing, when she saw what looked like a winning ticket, she still couldn’t believe her luck.

“I just told my husband to call the information line,” she said, referring to the Virginia Lottery’s Player Information Line, 804-662-LUCK.

Powerball is hot in Virginia. Since the beginning of the year, Virginians have won ten $1 million prizes, a $2 million prize and a $217 million jackpot, in Powerball alone.

Powerball drawings are held at 10:59 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays. They are broadcast on TV stations across Virginia and live on www.valottery.com. For more information on Powerball, visit www.powerball.com.
